Major League Baseball and El Paso Border Youth Athletic Association
Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with PLAY BALL El Paso Event
Major League Baseball and El Paso Border Youth Athletic Association will be hosting “PLAY BALL El Paso,”
MLB’s first ever bi-national PLAY BALL event, on May 5, 2018. Children ages 6 to 13 from across the
Borderlands, including youth from New Mexico and Cd. Juarez, are invited to attend the free, Cinco de Mayo
celebration of baseball and softball. The 90-minute event will be held at the El Paso Chihuahuas’ Southwest
University Park from 12:30pm to 2pm, and is made possible through Border Youth Athletic Association’s
affiliation with the RBI program and the El Paso Chihuahuas. Major League Baseball held more than 30 PLAY
BALL events in the United States and Canada in 2017. PLAY BALL events demonstrate the positive way the
game can serve as an outlet for physical activity, fun with friends and learning how to play the sport at its
most basic levels of the game.
El Paso Border Youth Athletic Association (BYAA) became an affiliate of MLB’s Reviving Baseball in Inner
Cities (RBI) program in 2016 through its BASE Play program, an afterschool initiative serving 4th, 5th and 6th
grade students in the economically distressed communities of El Paso County. In 2016, EBYAA partnered
with the El Paso Chihuahuas to create Chihuahuas NeXt, an elite development league featuring players
with higher skill levels in baseball and softball. This year, Chihuahuas NeXt joined BASE Play as an official
RBI league. The RBI effort is designed to increase baseball and softball participation in underserved
communities and to promote greater inclusion of people of color in the sport.
“Our focus is to make sure we come into communities that are looking for resources in order for kids to play,”
said David James, Vice President of Baseball & Softball Development, Major League Baseball.
Through the PLAY BALL initiative, MLB is encouraging young people and communities to engage in baseballor
softball-related activities, including formal leagues, special events and casual forms of play. PLAY BALL
events have become MLB’s signature youth engagement activity during the professional and amateur
baseball and softball calendar, especially on key dates throughout MLB’s Championship Season, and
through the Postseason & World Series. PLAY BALL’s consistent, simple message: However You Play Ball,
PLAY BALL El Paso will be held from 12:30pm to 2:00pm, May 5, 2018. Interested individuals can register
