Athletic Scholarships and Current Conditions

According to the Meadows Foundation, almost half of all graduating high school students in El Paso County do not enroll in higher education immediately following high school. Only 1% of students who fail to move directly into college or university environments complete a degree, making programs that support academic achievement critical to our community’s future.

Participation in scholastic sports provides lifelong advantages. Not only do student-athletes receive elevated academic support, but, as a group, graduate at higher rates than their peers. NCAA Divisions I and II schools provide more than $2.9 billion in athletic scholarships annually to more than 150,000 student-athletes. In order to compete for these scholarships, students must not only show outstanding aptitude on the field and in the classroom, they must register with NCAA.

El Paso ranks behind other cities in the Southwest in NCAA registrations.

As part of BYAA’s commitment to education through athletics, an in partnership with El Paso Chihuahuas Triple-A Baseball, Chihuahuas NeXt was formed. The Chihuahuas NeXt program is an elite skills development offering, geared to enhancing the competitive level of El Paso student-athletes, better positioning them for higher education scholarship opportunities.

Each year, BYAA holds a Compliance Seminar, a free event to assist parents and students with the NCAA eligibility, registration, and recruitment process. Attended by approximately 200 students annually, the seminar is designed to improve scholarship outcomes for El Paso student-athletes.

All people are welcome to participate in El Paso Border Youth Athletic Association programs., clinics, and seminars regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, ability, ethnicity, religion, or ability to pay.
